Abstract:Starting with the analysis of the connotation of culture, this paper describes such four different aspects of culture as material culture, high-level culture, popular culture and deep-levelculture, demonstrating the relationship between the language and the culture of a nation,summarizing the fundamental qualities indispensable for inter-cultural communication. It is proposed in this paper that successful inter-cultural communication requires understanding of the exact cultural implication at the lexical level, of the pragmatic meaning of linguistic forms, of the cultural implication in communicative contexts and the command of the nonverbal communicative means used in the culture of the target language. It is strongly emphasized that to teach linguistic knowledge, to train language competence is necessary but inadequate for foreign language teaching, whose responsibility it is also to introduce the cultural features of the nation of the target language.
