Abstract:“Transferred Negation” plays an important role in oral English and in written English. In form, “not” modifies the whole sentence and seems to negate the meaning of it. However, in meaning, it turns out that “not” only negates some segments of the sentence. It goes without saying that the modification of “not” has an essential effect upon the understanding of a whole sentence in some cases. This article makes a generalization, with the purpose of leading the English-learners to having better mastery of English expressions.
